The Last Ship Episode 7 SOS (4)

On the latest episode of “The Last Ship,” the team heard an “SOS” and headed in the woman’s direction, as she might well be the key to finding the cure, having survived an outbreak of the virus that took down an entire fishing boat. Was she immune? Or was it a trap by the Russians? Or someone else? The crew of the Nathan James opted to find out, by sending a team the woman’s way.

As it turned out, the woman in question, Bertrise, was indeed immune and was successfully brought onboard the ship to aid Dr. Scott in finding the cure. Unfortunately, in the process, the NJ had to first contact Bertrise, which got the attention of the Russians, as they had to break radio silence to get her location. Even worse, the Russians sent a team to attack the US teams, which resulted in a fire fight that sunk the raft that Chandler and Tex were on, leaving them stranded at sea.

Knowing that cluing them in on their location could lead the Russians to the ship, Chandler orders the NJ to stop looking, but Slattery won’t let that stand and sends out a copter to search. I guess it’s a good thing Slattery didn’t go on the mission this time! Maybe they learned their lesson somewhat from the jungle revolt incident, which almost cost them both their captain and second-in-command. Still, I don’t think the captain should have been on that team any more than he should have been on the jungle team.

Eventually, someone does find Chandler and Tex…but it’s not the NJ- it’s the Russians! So, we end the episode with Chandler (and presumably Tex, though that may not be a given) being held captive by the Russians. So, will the NJ trade the Russians Dr. Scott for Chandler, which is who I assume they still want? Or will Chandler insist that they do no such thing, which is likely? Assuming that he does, will they even listen? I guess we’ll have to wait and see next week.

This was a decent episode, with a tense scene on the fishing boat as the teams looked for Bertrise and another as the Russians attacked the team afterwards. Though it was mostly a transitional episode, it did serve the purpose of getting us one step closer to the cure, and in leading to another face-off with the Russians, which should be even more intense, least of all with the hostage situation.

All in all, it was an okay but not great episode, bolstered by some nice character moments, including Tex confessing his affection for Dr. Scott to a bemused Chandler, Green recovering from his momentary lapse of lovelorn reason to become a leader again, and Slattery making some tough calls with the Chandler situation.

Of the episodes we’ve gotten thus far, this was probably the least engaging, but it was also somewhat necessary, given that we needed to move forward on finding the cure somehow, and that there needed to be a reason for the NJ to come into contact with the Russians again. So, not the best episode, but a necessary one, nonetheless.

What did you think of “The Last Ship” this week? Were you a bit let down, or did you find the episode more entertaining than I did? Do you think Tex has a shot with Scott? What do you think the NJ will do about Chandler being caught by the Russians? How will they keep Scott safe? Will she find the cure sooner than later? What will happen next? Sound off below and I’ll see you next week!
